$50 Dump Cake

While a scout in Troop 148, we hosted a bake sale as a fundraiser. I remember that Dad had taken Tim and I that evening. While looking over the cakes, cookies, brownies, etc. there was one in particular that caught my eye. It was freshly baked, possibly in the church kitchen just before the bake sale, and even to this day, the aroma of a Dump Cake is reminiscent of this bake sale!

I wanted that Dump Cake! I asked Dad to bid on the Dump Cake, and before I knew it, we (he 🙂 ) was in a bidding war with our Scoutmaster, Joe Whelan. In the end, we out bid Joe and brought home the Dump Cake, paying $50. We later found out that the Dump Cake was baked by Joe’s wife, and our Troop Committee Chair, Betty Whelan!

When we arrived home, mom laughed as the Dump Cake probably only cost $2-3 to make!

For a nut-free variation, omit the chopped pecans, and sprinkle old-fashioned oats over the cake mix.
For a camping variation, prepare a 12-inch camp Dutch oven, and double the cake mix.  Place 8 charcoal briquettes underneath the Dutch oven and 16 briquettes on top.  Bake for 1-hour.
